AI is dramatically changing the landscape of operations globally therefore it must be considered a potential component in an organization of the future.

We're reviewing applications of AI within camera monitoring. Pilot projects are being implemented at facilities to:

• Improve safety
• Monitor facility conditions
• Counting passengers

In addition to this initiative, we're also measuring its efficiency in fleet vehicle preventative maintenance. Using technology, we aim to optimize maintenance schedules, minimize downtime and extend the lifespan of our vehicles.

Climate Action Plan

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we've developed a comprehensive Climate Action Plan. The plan outlines strategies to:

• reduce greenhouse gas emissions
• procure zero-emission buses
• integrate green principles into facility management

We aim to lead the way in promoting energy efficiency and waste reduction, while collaborating with other organizations to achieve shared environmental goals.

METRO curb2curb

METRO curb2curb offers an accessible, convenient, on-demand transit option for communities without direct access to standard bus routes. This service allows passengers the flexibility to schedule pickups and drop-offs within a defined zone, providing mobility within the community and connections to METRO facilities and services.

Trip Planning App

The RideMETRO app exemplifies our commitment to innovation in public transit. With features like real-time vehicle tracking, trip planning and personalized notifications, it makes travel on METRO more convenient and accessible.

Innovations in Accessibility

Beacons are installed at all METRO bus stops and integrate with the METRO TRIP App to notify customers when they are approaching their bus stop and remind them to disembark or transfer to another service when it is time. As you approach your stop, the phone will notify you either through audio instructions or as a vibration. With the vibration or pulse feature, as you get closer the pulse increases until you reach your stop. The tool is designed to help those with visual impairments use METRO.

Onboard Wi-Fi

In 2019, the Office of Innovation conducted research and development on Wi-Fi connectivity for transit through a pilot program called the Smart City Initiative, in partnership with the City of Houston and Microsoft. This initiative led to increased connectivity for over 10,000 METRO riders.

Building on the success of the pilot program, the METRO Board of Directors approved the expansion of free Wi-Fi services to all buses, paratransit vehicles and trains. This enhanced connectivity has transformed transit systems, enabling customers to stay connected throughout their journeys on the METRO system.

Solar Energy Panels

METRO plans to introduce solar energy initiatives at two facilities as part of our commitment to investing in renewable energy. Our objective is to increase the proportion of renewable energy sources from 25% to 35% by the year 2030. The locations for these initiatives will be the West Bus Operating Facility and the Townsen Park and Ride.

At the West Bus Operating Facility, we'll install solar arrays on a canopy structure and incorporate onsite battery energy storage. These improvements will provide facility resilience and help with the integration of electric bus charging infrastructure. Similarly, the Townsen P&R will have a solar array (ground-mount and/or carport) and potential onsite battery for facility resiliency.
